ETIAS eligibility for US citizens
Such Visa Waiver is suitable for American citizens with ordinary passport whose stay in the ETIAS Area in its entirety will not exceed 90 days within 6 months.
The US passport used for the ETIAS application must have a remaining validity long enough to cover for the whole duration of the trip planned to the ETIAS Area with an additional surplus of 3 months.
To be considered eligible for ETIAS, US passport holders, must also meet with the requirement of having the full US citizen status. Holders of US passports that do not have the status of full American citizen are indeed not eligible for ETIAS and hence required to apply for a Consular Visa at the competent Embassy or Consulate of the country they wish to visit.
Since its eligibility criteria are inextricably linked to one’s citizenship, holders of US green card can only apply for ETIAS only if they have nationality and passport from one of the 60 ETIAS eligible countries. Those in possession of a passport from a country that is not included in the EU Visa Waiver program will need a Schengen Visa even though they have a valid US Green Card.
ETIAS eligibility to US citizens is also linked to the purpose of the journey. The only authorized activities with ETIAS for Americans are the following:- Tourism, including family and friends visiting, and leisure
- Business, commerce and trade
- Medical therapy
- Transit
US travelers wishing to visit an ETIAS destination with the aim to study or work are therefore not considered eligible to ETIAS and consequently required to apply for a specific Consular Visa.
It must be pointed out that, even though it is not compatible with long term study curricula in EU/Schengen Area Countries, ETIAS Visa Waiver can be used for short term study programs if the stay in the ETIAS countries area will not exceed the aforementioned threshold of 90 days within 180 days. Moreover, it is important in such cases for US nationals to check if the school or institution where they will be studying accepts to enroll scholars travelling on a ETIAS instead of demanding for them to hold a Student Visa. When to apply for ETIAS?
The Visa Waiver to US Nationals, when approved, is sent to the e-mail of the traveler in most cases within 72 hours since the application has been submitted and paid for.
If for any reason US travelers need to urgently receive feedback to their ETIAS application, they are invited to flag the “urgent procedure” button in the application form.
The US passport used to apply for ETIAS must have enough validity to cover the whole planned stay in the ETIAS Area with 3 additional months of remaining validity counting from the date of departure from the Schengen Area.
Travelling with a passport not meeting with these validity requirements can lead to rejection of entry upon arrival at the Schengen Area’s External Borders.Documents to be shown upon arrival
Valid passport and ETIAS are the two basic documents almost every US citizen will need upon arrival at the Schengen Area’s land, air or sea borders.
Border control officers can anyway always ask American visitors to provide additional documentation in order to assess the planned duration of the trip to the Schengen Area and its genuine purpose. US passport holders travelling on an ETIAS are therefore always recommended to carry with themselves supplementary documents like, for instance, a confirmed return ticket or a confirmed onwards ticket to a non-ETIAS Country where the traveler from USA has a proven right to enter. Another requirement could be for the US visitors to prove the availability of sufficient funds to cover for their whole stay in Europe. How long is ETIAS valid for?
On a standard basis ETIAS for American citizens is valid for 3 years starting from its date of issue. From that date ETIAS allows for multiple entries in any of the Member Countries provided that the restrictions concerning purpose and duration of the trip are always complied with. It is although possible, in some cases, that the ETIAS validity will have a shorter extension than three years; this might occur if the passport expires before such timeframe. In such cases the Visa Waiver expiry date for American visitor will be the same as their passport’s. It is although important to highlight that, when travelling to Europe, all US citizens must have a passport whose expiry date is at least 3 months away starting from the date they are scheduled to leave the ETIAS Area. If, for instance, a passenger’s passport expires on June 1st, 2025, that persons will have to exit the ETIAS Area before March 1st, 2025, regardless of the date of entry in the EU/Schengen Countries.
