ETIAS general conditions
From early 2025, Nationals of Taiwan will be eligible and required for ETIAS Visa Waiver in order to travel to and across the 34 ETIAS Member Countries. An ETIAS will be necessary for trips to such European Nations whose proven purpose is for either leisure, business, transit or medical treatment and with a stay in the ETIAS Area as a whole never exceeding ninety days out of every six months.
As far as travel purposes are concerned it must be emphasized that also family and friends visit journeys are allowed since such purpose fits in the leisure and tourism criteria.
Moreover, although ETIAS is not fit for long term study programs, the Visa Waiver can be used for short training programs if the stay in the ETIAS Countries Area as a whole will not surpass the aforementioned combined permanence threshold. To this extent still it is always recommended, before applying for an ETIAS, to verify if the receiving school or institute in Europe accepts to enroll scholars with a Visa Waiver and not with a Schengen Study Visa.Country specific requirements
Visitors from Taiwan with planned stay longer than 90 days within 6 months or whose purpose of the trip is not included in the short list above will still be required to apply for a Consular Visa.
The same restriction applies to Taiwan Nationals whose passport does not carry, among the other personal information, a national identity card number.

Just like citizens of 59 other ETIAS Eligible Countries, National of Taiwan be required to electronically submit a short set of data to put forward their Visa Waiver application. Personal data, contact details including a valid e-mail address, details of the first planned trip to ETIAS Area and background questions are the sets of information each applicant is asked to input while completing the questionnaire.
Once the application has been sent forward through the payment of the ETIAS taxes, all the information will be cross checked by EU Institutions and a number of official security databases.
The checking protocol is meticulous but at the same time quick and has been designed so as to allow most of the applicants with passport from Taiwan to receive the outcome to their application, on their e-mail address, in no more than 3 days.
It is therefore strongly recommended to apply for ETIAS Visa Waiver at least 72 hours prior to the scheduled departure time towards the Europe.
Since The ETIAS outcome notification, positive or negative, will only be sent directly to each petitioner’s personal e-mail it is very important for each traveler to input a valid and working e-mail account when filling out the required information and methods of contact.ETIAS validity parameters
Once issued ETIAS is valid for multiple travels and with a validity of maximum 3 years or until the passport expiry date.
ETIAS Visa Waiver is than valid for all travel that fit inside the limits of purpose and stay mentioned above and regardless of the point of origin of the trip and of the mean of transportation used.
As a matter of fact, ETIAS covers from entries to the EU/Schengen Area Countries not just from air borders but also from land and sea borders alike.Upon arrival
When arriving to EU/Schengen Area from Taiwan, EU Officers have the faculty to require additional documents to prove the purpose and scheduled duration of their journey such as:
- travel health insurance (recommended but not mandatory for visa waiver visitor)
- return ticket to origin country
- onwards ticket to a non-ETIAS Member Country
- evidence of sufficient funds to support the whole travel
Every time a travel toward takes place on an ETIAS all Taiwan passport holders must make sure their travel document has at least 3 months of validity left for the entire stay in Europe planned for such trip.
