ETIAS for Solomon Islands visitors: general rules
Beneficiary of Visa Waiver rights to a European Union and Schengen Area Member Countries already to this day, Solomon Islands citizens has been confirmed in 2016, will be recipient of the ETIAS Visa Waiver protocol to be enforced from early 2025.
Covering for travels for either tourism, family visit, business, trade, medical treatment or transit, with a duration of not exceeding 90 days in 180 days, ETIAS will hence be soon required to all Solomon Islands passport holders provided that they do not already possess a valid Schengen Visa or Permit of Stay.
To this extent in must be highlighted that until their respective membership in the Schengen Area is perfected a national Visa or Permit of Stay issued by Romania, Bulgaria or Cyprus will not be considered a valid exemption criterion from the obligation to hold an ETIAS or Schengen Visa, while ETIAS will in any case be required to Visa Waiver visitors entering such States.
It must also be highlighted that even if ETIAS is not fit for long term study programs, ETIAS Visa Waiver can actually be used for short training programs provided that the stay in the ETIAS countries area will not surpass the threshold of ninety days within 6 months.
The same principle applies to family and friends visits that are indeed included in the touristic purpose.ETIAS geographical extension
Besides the already mentioned ETIAS terms of use, another limitation is to be considered. ETIAS is, as a matter of fact, required only for journeys to the 34 European Countries that are to some extent bound to the Schengen Area.
Republic of Ireland (EIRE) is a EU Member Country but does not participate in the Schengen Convention and therefore applies differing immigration measures. The same for UK that is currently not part of either the European Union or the Schengen Area.
Solomon Islands visitors planning to sojourn in Europe more than 90 days within 6 months or whose purpose of the trip is not included in the short list above will on the other hand still be required to obtain a Consular Visa whose application must be submitted at the relevant Embassy or Consulate of the European Nation they wish to visit.To apply for ETIAS Visa Waiver
With the same provision involving all other 59 ETIAS Eligible Countries, Citizens of Solomon Islands willing to submit their Visa Waiver application will be required to input a series of data in the ETIAS electronic form.
Among these mandatory data are:- Full name and surname
- Surname at birth
- Birth date
- Birth place
- Birth country
- Passport number
- Passport’s place of issue
- Passport’s authority of issue
- Passport’s issue date
- Passport’s expiry date
- Contact details including a valid e-mail address
- First country of intended stay in Europe and planned date of arrival
- General eligibility questions
Once ETIAS application has been put through by mean of payment of the ETIAS taxes, all the information will be cross-checked by EU Institutions and a number of international security databases accredited to the EU.
ETIAS security pre-clearance
The cross-checking protocol is scrupulous and yet very fast and is indeed expected to allow most of the applicants from Solomon Islands to receive the outcome of their application on their e-mail address in less 72 hours.
Once issued, the ETIAS Visa Waiver for Solomon Islands passport holders are valid for 3 years or until the passport expiry date (whichever incurs first) and allows for multiple entries in the any of the EU/Schengen Area Nations regardless of the point of origin of the journey itself.Accessing Europe on an ETIAS
It is crucial that all visitors ensure before departure that the passport used for the ETIAS application, and therefore ETIAS itself, have a remaining validity long enough to cover for the whole duration of the trip planned to the ETIAS Area. Also, the passport itself must have a minimum of three months of validity left until the planned date of departure from ETIAS Area towards any external Country.
When entering the Schengen Area, whether through air, land or seaport ETIAS Member State’s Border Control Officers can always ask visitors from Solomon Islands to show supporting documents to clarify the purpose of their travel and to make sure they do not plan to stay within the ETIAS Area longer than they are allowed to.
Among the additional documents that could be required are:- Proof of sufficient funds to support one’s stay in Europe
- Health travel insurance
- Return ticket to the country of origin
- Onwards ticket to a non-ETIAS country where the individual has a proven right to enter
