Portugal’s trading and travelling legacy
Located on the Western side of the Iberian Peninsula, Portugal is, together with Spain, the point of contact between the Mediterranean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean. This geographical feature allowed the country to gain, through the centuries, a culture that is deeply rooted in international trade and explorations. Columbus’ first journey towards what came to be discovered as the Americas started form Portugal, and Portuguese were some of the greatest explorers of human history like Magellan and Vasco da Gama.
It is therefore no awe that Portugal still retains to this day a commercial culture that is so strongly linked with naval transportations.
Portugal is though also one of the fastest developing nations in Europe and also a constantly growing touristic destination both to European and Non-European visitors.
With that many economic interests intertwined to the aspect of cross border traffic it is predictable that the inception of the ETIAS System in 2025 will create a great benefit to the security of Portugal’s ports of entry.
Such increase in safety also is expected to benefit the Visa Waiver visitor that will come to Portugal on an ETIAS.Application process
Despite this one more document will be required so as to arrange trips to Portugal and the rest of EU/Schengen Area, with the sole exception of the Republic of Ireland, the application procedure for aforementioned Visa Waiver called ETIAS has been confirmed to be an uncomplicated and quick process.
In order to submit their ETIAS request all passengers are to input in the electronic form their personal data, details about the first scheduled trip to the ETIAS Area and finally are also asked to answer some background check and eligibility questions.
Each individual with passport of one of the 60 Visa Waiver Countries will need to have an ETIAS of his/her own; this will hence also include minors that are for this reason required to have a valid passport of their own.
ETIAS Visa Waiver, once approved, will be sent to the e-mail of the future traveler in most cases within 72 hours.Eligibility of use
The only allowed travel purposes covered by ETIAS are for Business, Tourism, Transit and Medical Treatment; even in such cases the maximum permanence within the ETIAS Area as a whole must always be no longer than ninety days within six months. Visa Waiver Nationals aiming to study, work or live in Portugal or other ETIAS Countries on a long-term basis will still be demanded to apply for a specific Consular Visa.
Although ETIAS is not fit for long term study programs, ETIAS Visa Waiver can be used to enter the Portuguese Republic for short training programs if the stay in the ETIAS countries area will not pass the timing threshold mentioned above.
Additional details on ETIAS standards of use are available here.ETIAS practical use
Despite being necessary for short term trips falling in the categories mentioned above, ETIAS Visa Waiver itself does not give a certainty that the Visa Waiver passport holder will automatically be allowed to enter the EU Borders since the final decision on this matter is responsibility of the Border Control Officers.
Short-term visitors coming to Portugal on an ETIAS are therefore to recall that they might always be asked to provide further documents like:- return ticket to origin country
- onwards ticket to a non-ETIAS Member Country
- proof of sufficient funds to support their journey
So as to avoid problems during the Border Control Procedures it is absolutely important that all data inputted in the ETIAS Application form are correct and truthful.
EtiasEU will bear no responsibility in case of false or non correct input data.
Madeira and Azores
Madeira and Azores Islands are, despite the remarkable distance from mainland’s shores, integral part of Portugal and apply the very same immigration norms. ETIAS system will, therefore, also be enforced in these overseas territories.
