ETIAS for Paraguayans: a foreword
According to the protocol validated by EU in 2016 the ETIAS Visa Waiver requirement will start being enforced in the beginning of year 2023 and it has officially been confirmed to also involve holders of passports from the Republic of Paraguay.
As a consequence, Citizens of Paraguay with a valid passport will, from 2025, be able to electronically submit their application for European Union’s Visa Waiver named ETIAS.
It is then important to notice that starting from 2025 short visit to any of the ETIAS Countries will not be possible for Paraguay passport holders who do not have a valid Visa Waiver.
ETIAS is only a required condition for journeys to the 34 European Countries that are to some extent linked to the Schengen Area. The United Kingdom has left the European Union in 2021 and never was part of the Schengen Area; UK is therefore not part of the ETIAS Area. The same basis applies to EIRE since its is an EU Member State, but it remains outside the European border-free travel area.Requiring an ETIAS Visa Waiver
The ETIAS application procedure for Nationals of Paraguay is easy to complete and requires no more than ten minutes to input their data for each candidate.
Such data include:- personal information like full name and surname, birthplace, birth country, birth date
- contact details
- scheduled travel to EU related information
- eligibility and background questions
When the ETIAS form has been filled out and the application has been paid and sent through Paraguay Citizens will receive the outcome on their personal e-mail in most cases within 3 days only.
Since The ETIAS approval will only be sent directly to the petitioner’s personal e-mail it is very important to always input a valid and working e-mail account when filling out the required form.
Once received the positive outcome, ETIAS Visa Waiver to citizens of Paraguay is valid for 3 years and authorizes multiple entries to any of the Schengen Area Member or De Facto Member Countries.
Passengers whose passport expire in less than 3 years from the ETIAS issue date must remember that their ETIAS will cease its validity together with the passport.
Minors too will need an ETIAS and must therefore hold and individual passport to apply for the Visa Waiver through the support of a parent or legal guardian.Travelling on an ETIAS
It is significant to recall that upon reaching the ETIAS Area Borders all ETIAS Holders from Paraguay, regardless of the point of origin of their journey, will be required to have both passport and ETIAS with a validity long enough to cover for their whole stay in the ETIAS Member States and actually also have an exceeding validity period of at least three full months.
Even though it is compulsory to have one for short term trips falling under the categories cited in the Basic Facts, holding a ETIAS Visa Waiver itself does not grant automatic access inside the EU Borders since the final decision on this aspect is always responsibility of the Border Control Officers.
Voyagers coming to Schengen Area from Paraguay are therefore to notice that they could at any time be required to provide additional documents to appraise the genuine purpose of their trip and that there is no intention to overstay in the ETIAS Area. Additional documents may include:- return ticket to country of residence
- onwards ticket to a non-ETIAS country where the Paraguay citizen has right to enter
- travel health insurance
- proof of sufficient funds to support oneself during the whole stay
Summary on ETIAS limitations of use
As stated above the only allowed travel purposes covered by ETIAS for Citizens of Paraguay are Commerce/Trade, Tourism, Transit and Medical Treatment; also, the total stay within the ETIAS countries must never exceed 90 of every 180 days. Paraguay Nationals willing to study, work or live in an ETIAS country will indeed be required to apply for a specific Consular Visa at the relevant Embassy or Consulate of the Country they wish to visit. More detailed information about ETIAS limitations of use can be found in this website’s Guideline and FAQ session.
Still, even if ETIAS is not fit for long term study, ETIAS Visa Waiver can be used by Citizens of Paraguay for short term programs (such as language classes, cooking classes and corporate training courses) if the stay in the ETIAS countries area will not pass the aforementioned limit of stay.
