Malta’s historic, commercial and political heritage
Popular tourist destination thanks to its welcoming climate and breathtaking views, Malta is far more than just a leisure hotspot.
Shipping transportations and logistics, shipbuilding and finance are just some of the most important sectors of the Maltese thriving economy.
Also, Malta as a Country can boast an ancient cultural heritage just as prestigious as all other European counterparts. It therefore no wonder that in 2018 its capital city of La Valletta was selected to be European Capital of Culture for that year.
Member of the EU since 2004, Malta is now also part of the Schengen Area and therefore among the 30 Nations that will, from 2025, implement the ETIAS Visa Waiver System.
Being an insular nation Malta’s border can of course be crossed only air or seaway, but this characteristic will in no way affect the mode ETIAS protocol shall be enforced.Malta ETIAS
The ETIAS Visa Waiver to Malta must be applied for electronically and, in the same way, the outcome of the application will be sent to the e-mail account of each passenger.
On a standard basis ETIAS application outcome shall be available within 72 hours since the application time. It is therefore strongly recommended for each petitioner, minors included, to submit their application at least 72 hours prior to their scheduled departure time towards the ETIAS Area.
The ETIAS application process to Malta is easy to approach and should require just a few minutes to input the required data.
Such data include:- personal information such as full name and surname, birthplace, birth country, birth date
- planned travel to EU related information
- background and eligibility questions
Once received a positive outcome, like it will in most cases be, ETIAS will be valid for 3 years and allow for multiple trips towards Malta and any of the 33 other Members or de facto members of EU’s Schengen Area.
Entering Malta as ETIAS visitors
Although necessary in most cases, ETIAS Visa Waiver itself does not automatically constitute a certainty that a person will be allowed to enter the Maltese / EU Borders since the final decision on this matter is always responsibility of the Border Control Officers.
On this aspect travelers coming to Malta might be required to provide further documents like:- return ticket to origin country
- proof of sufficient funds
- travel health insurance
To avoid problems during the Border Control Procedures it is of paramount importance that all data inputted in the ETIAS Application form are correct and truthful.
It is important to highlight that ETIAS eligibility to access Malta and other European Countries is strictly connected to the nationality of passport of the visitors. The Country of residence or the point of origin of the journey have therefore no influence on ETIAS eligibility.
Additionally, it must be emphasized that the only allowed travel purposes covered by EU’s Visa Waiver are for Business, Tourism, Transit and Medical Treatment and with maximum permanence within the ETIAS Area as a whole that must always be no longer than ninety days within six months. Visa Waiver Nationals aiming to work or study in Malta or other ETIAS Countries on a long-term basis will still be demanded to apply for a specific Consular Visa.
Still ETIAS can be used to access Malta for short training programs if the stay in the ETIAS Area will not pass the timing threshold mentioned above.
