Macao and Europe
Located just off the shores of Mainland China, the Special Administrative Region of Macao can boast, thanks to its cultural and commercial descent, a fierce historic tie to Europe in its broader sense.
Macao has indeed been a reliable and strong partner to the European Union along many years both on the trading and on the diplomatic side.
This close partnership also benefited Macao passport holders that were indeed granted years ago Visa Waiver rights to a number of European Nations. These rights were recently reconfirmed by EU’s High Commission which also officialized that Macao National will, from 2025, be granted eligibility to the ETIAS Visa Waiver System.ETIAS eligibility benchmarks
It is crucial to notice that applicants from Macao must hold of a valid Regiao Administrativa Especial de Macau Passport in order to be eligible for ETIAS.
Those who do not hold such kind of passport are indeed required to apply for a Visa at the relevant Consulate of the Schengen Country they wish to visit even if their trip to Europe originates from Macao and/or they are Macao residents.
The same requirement applies to all the Macao Nationals whose goal is to live, work or study in the ETIAS Member Countries and/or plan to stay longer than 90 days every 6 months. On this aspect it must though be noticed that even if ETIAS is not suitable for long term study programs, the Visa Waiver can be used by eligible candidates for short training programs if the stay in the ETIAS Countries Area will not exceed the limit of ninety days out of every six months.ETIAS candidacy
The ETIAS application procedure for Regiao Administrativa Especial de Macau passport holders is intuitive and quick and is indeed expected to require each passenger no more than 10 minutes to input their data.
Such mandatory data include:- personal information
- contact details including a valid e-mail address
- first scheduled travel to Europe related information
- general eligibility and background check questions
The ETIAS application must be put forward electronically and, once it has been completed, Macao Nationals will in most cases receive the outcome within 72 hours. The outcome will be sent via e-mail exclusively.
It is therefore strongly recommended to apply for ETIAS Visa Waiver at least 72 hours prior to the scheduled departure time towards the Europe.
If for any reason Macao applicants need to urgently receive feedback to their ETIAS application they are invited to flag the “urgent procedure” key in the application form.Validity of the Visa Waiver
Once received the outcome, that will in most cases be positive, ETIAS Visa Waiver issued to citizens of Macao will have a validity of three years and it will allow multiple entries in 34 ETIAS Member States regardless of the place of origin of the journey.
Macao visitors whose passport expire in less than 3 years from the application date must notice that their ETIAS will cease to be valid along with the passport used for the request and must also always make sure that the remaining validity of their passport will cover for their whole stay in the ETIAS Area with a surplus of 3 months of remaining validity.Entering ETIAS Area
Travelers coming to Europe’s Schengen Area from abroad, and not falling in one of the few exceptional cases, must remind that they might always be demanded, upon arrival, to present additional documents to assess the genuine purpose of their trip and so as to demonstrate they do not plan to overstay in the ETIAS Area. Such additional documents may include:
return ticket to country of residence
proof of sufficient funds to support themselves during the whole stay
any documents that could prove the actual purpose of the visitA health insurance is not formally needed for Macao Passport Holders travelling on an ETIAS but is always recommended.
