ETIAS and Visa Waiver Rights
In the 2016 resolution that kick-started the bureaucracy aimed at building the ETIAS System, the EU High commission and Schengen Area Member States confirmed that citizens of El Salvador will continue to enjoy Visa Waiver rights to the 34 Program Member States and that therefore they will too, from early 2025, be required to obtain an ETIAS for their EU-bound travels.
This obligation will not affect holders of El Salvador passport that are already legally resident in 33 out of the 34 ETIAS Countries Area (Cyprus excluded) and/or that hold a relevant Schengen Visa or Permit of Stay.
It is indeed clear that despite being mandatory for most visitors coming to the European Union / Schengen Area from El Salvador, ETIAS will not be suitable for all sort of trips.ETIAS – When to have one?
Tourism/leisure/family visit together with business, transit and medical treatment are, as a matter of fact the only travel purposes suitable for ETIAS travelers and even in such cases the total stay in the ETIAS Area will not be unlimited. A maximum combined stay of 90 days every 6 months is allowed.
Therefore, voyagers from El Salvador looking to work, study or move to one of the 34 ETIAS destinations will not be able to use their Visa Waiver rights since they will have the legal obligation to obtain a Consular Visa prior to the start of their trip.It is to be highlighted that all Nationals of El Salvador fitting in the previously mentioned eligibility criteria will need ETIAS for short trips to Europe’s ETIAS Area and this will therefore include minors whose application of course, must be submitted by a legally authorized adult on their behalf.
ETIAS application in details
The application process itself will be linear and simple since each traveler will just need to have basic credentials such as:
- Hold a valid passport issued by the Republic of El Salvador
- Have a valid e-mail address
- Possess a valid card on other electronical payment method for the ETIAS tax payment
While filling out the electronic application form, candidates will be asked for a series of information that will broadly include:
- Full name and surname
- Surname at birth
- Birth date
- Birth place
- Birth country
- Passport number
- Passport’s place and authority of issue
- Passport’s issue and expiry date
- Contact details including a valid e-mail address
- Scheduled arrival date in ETIAS Area
- First country of intended stay in Europe
Although the application process is extremely simple, once the data have been sent through it is not possible to change them and even a slight mistake can lead to a rejection of the Visa Waiver. Hence it is strongly recommended for each petitioners to double check all the data inputted for the ETIAS Visa Waiver application.
Decision making process
After submitting all the data through the electronic payment process the application’s details will go through a cross-check by security database that will quickly establish whether the candidate is eligible for ETIAS and allow European authorities to than make a decision on the application itself.
The feedback, which is expected to be positive in most case, will automatically be sent to the applicant’s e-mail address usually within 72 hours.
ETIAS Visa Waiver will than have a validity of up to 3 years or until the passport expiry date (whichever incurs first) and allow multiple entries in Europe’s Schengen Area for short term travels.Travelling on an ETIAS
Upon each single travel taken on an ETIAS, all the terms of use of the Visa Waiver must be complied with and the passport must have a remaining validity of at least three months since the date of departure from Europe.
Even though necessary for short term trips falling under the aforementioned categories, holding the Visa Waiver itself does not give a total certainty that the El Salvador passport holder will indeed be allowed to enter the EU Borders since the final decision on this matter is only and always responsibility of the Border Control Law Enforcement Officers.
Visitors coming to EU / Schengen Area from El Salvador might always be required to provide further documents to assess the genuine scope of their trips such as:- return ticket to origin country or onwards ticket to a non-ETIAS Member Country
- proof of sufficient funds to support their journey
- Any other document that could help assessing the genuine purpose of the travel
- travel health insurance (not mandatory but recommended for ETIAS legitimate visitors)
In order to avoid problems while at the EU Border Control it is absolutely important that all data inputted in the ETIAS Application form by the travelers from El Salvador are complete, correct and truthful.
EtiasEU will bear no responsibility in case of false or non correct input data.
