Austria in modern Europe
Situated in the very heart of Europe among the natural beauty of the Alps the Republic of Austria, now home of one the most respected democracies of the Western World, was until early 1900’s homeland of a vast empire whose hegemony reached territories that are currently part of Italy, Czech Republic, Romania, Hungary and more.
Like for many European realities the World War II aftermath was the trigger to a new political and diplomatic era that slowly but steadily created the foundations for a new mindset leading Austria towards joining the EU, after years of productive cooperations and peaceful negotiations, in 1995.
Despite becoming part of the European Union almost 40 years after its creation, Austria soon became strongly involved in such institution also deserving a role as major player in decision making process and gaining therefore a growing diplomatic and trading standing.Austria’s guidance towards shift to ETIAS system
This ever-growing leadership of Austria made its representative in the EU’s parliament and high commission among the main sponsors for the creation of a Visa Waiver System that would make the European Borders safer while at the same time protecting the commercial partnership that make travel movements between Europe and Visa Waiver Countries so important.
Such Visa Waiver now became reality, and it is called ETIAS which stands for European Travel Information and Authorization System. According to the protocol validated by the European Union in 2016 and successively in 2018 the ETIAS Visa Waiver requirement, will come to a start in early 2023.
As a matter of fact, Visa Waiver Nationals from 60 Countries around the globe intending to come to Austria or European Union and Schengen Area in general for brief visits will, from 2023, be required to electronically submit their application for EU’s Visa Waiver named ETIAS.ETIAS to Austria application
The ETIAS to Austria application process is easy to fill out and poses a short set of very standard questions always to be answered in truthful and complete way.
Such sets of questions include:- personal information like full name and surname, birthplace, birth country, birth date
- scheduled travel to EU related information
- contact details
- eligibility and background questions
Once the application has been submitted, candidates will receive the outcome, positive in most cases, within 72 hours on their personal e-mail.
Since The ETIAS approval will only be sent directly to each petitioner’s personal e-mail it is very important for each applicant to input a valid and working e-mail account when they fill out the required form.
Once received the positive outcome, ETIAS Visa Waiver to Austria is valid for 3 years and allows for multiple journeys towards not only Austria itself but towards all the 34 Countries part of the EU/Schengen Area with the sole exception of Ireland.
Those passengers whose passports expire in less than 3 years from the ETIAS issue date must remember that their ETIAS will cease its validity together with the passport and that it is required for the passport to have at least three months of remaining validity from the day of their scheduled departure from the ETIAS Area.Entering ETIAS Area through Austria
Even though its possession is compulsory for short term trips falling under the categories cited in the summary above, holding a ETIAS Visa Waiver itself does not ensure that the Nationals of Visa Waiver Country will be allowed inside Austria since the final decision on this aspect is only taken by the Border Control Officers.
Travelers coming to Austria from a non-Schengen Area Country are therefore to remind that they could be asked to present additional documents to assess the genuine purpose of their trip and that they do not plan to overstay in the ETIAS Area. Such additional documents may include:- return ticket to country of residence
- onwards ticket to a non-ETIAS country where the individual has a proven right to enter
- travel health insurance
- proof of sufficient funds to support themselves during the whole stay
